Chaga contains beta-glucans and polysaccharides that may modulate the activity of immune cells and help the body respond better to infections or various stressors.
It is rich in antioxidants (polyphenols, melanin, triterpenes) that help neutralize free radicals and thus reduce oxidative stress - a factor associated with chronic inflammation and cell aging.
Preliminary animal studies suggest that chaga may have an effect on:
lowering cholesterol levels (especially LDL)
regulating blood sugar levels
Improving lipid profile
...which may be important for metabolic health.
It is often used as an adaptogen, which means it can help the body respond better to stress and strain and promote overall vitality.
In traditional cultures, chaga tea has been used for digestion, restoring the lining of the stomach and digestive system, and as a tonic during colder periods.
Tea or infusion - most common form: pour hot water over and infuse.
Add to smoothies, coffee, yogurt, porridge - the powder can be mixed into food or drinks.
Dosage is individual, often a few grams a day is given, but specific recommendations depend on intensity of use and overall health goal.
Drug Interactions: may affect blood sugar levels and blood clotting - consult a physician if taking diabetes or blood thinning medications.
Oxalates: Chaga has a relatively high oxalate content, which may be risky for people with a tendency to kidney stones.
Pregnant & lactating women: safety unproven - consult a specialist advisable.
