Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is an annual or biennial, powerful thistle from the Asteraceae family.
The seeds are difficult to crush.
A biennial herb, it sprouts in spring with a tuft of spiny leaves with prominent white veins. At the end of June, purple-red inflorescences appear on stems about 1 m long. Flowering lasts from July to September. At the end of summer, the flowers develop into fruits, which are then harvested. Milk thistle can help the liver function properly. The name is related to an old legend, according to which the white spots on the leaves were created from the milk of the Virgin Mary.
Because of its appearance, milk thistle is also grown as an ornamental plant.
Milk thistle is an ancient herband , formerly also called "Christ's crown" due to its thorns. Although it is originally from the Mediterranean, it can also be grown in our conditions. It was already used in ancient times as a traditional medicine, among other things, administered after snakebites. In the 17th century, people already knew its positive effect on the liver, blood pressure, problems associated with the abdominal cavity and it was also administered as a medicine for melancholy and depression.
The healing effects with which milk thistle is associated today are mainly related to liver disease . It protects this important organ from undesirable substances commonly found in food, drink or air. It can help, for example, in the treatment of inflammation and cirrhosis of the liver, but also as a prevention of the formation of gallstones. It can also alleviate the consequences of liver damage caused by long-term excessive alcohol consumption. Milk thistle is also used for the regeneration of liver cells and blood vessels, for varicose veins, diseases of the gallbladder, spleen and duodenum, for colic, jaundice and as a decoction for the treatment of hemorrhoids. It is also recommended as a dietary supplement for weight loss due to its detoxifying effects.
The main active ingredient in this miraculous herb is silymarin , which restores liver tissue. Silymarin has such strong effects that it is also used to regenerate damaged livers in drug addicts, alcoholics, people after poisoning (e.g. mushrooms or drugs), after chemotherapy, for severely obese people or those suffering from liver cirrhosis. Milk thistle has 4-6 percent of this substance in its seeds.
The liver has an indispensable function in the body in processing nutrients and is a key organ in ensuring metabolism . It also helps in detoxification of the body and biotransformation, synthesis of blood plasma proteins and serves as a storehouse of vitamins, iron, glycogen and other substances. Because it also has many other important functions, in case of its failure , metabolic disorders, blood clotting disorders occur and in acute cases liver failure can be fatal.
Side effects of long-term use are unknown, only in rare cases may mild laxative effects occur in the first few days.
In order for milk thistle to exert its effects, it should be used regularly for several weeks to months, preferably 2-3 times a year.
It is important to avoid alcoholic beverages, synthetic medications, and foods rich in fat during this treatment.
