Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a robust annual or biennial thistle from the Asteraceae family.
The seeds are difficult to crush.
This biennial herb sprouts in the spring as a clump of spiny leaves with distinctive white veins. In late June, purplish-red flower heads appear on stems about 1 m long. Flowering lasts from July through September. By late summer, the flowers develop into fruits, which are then harvested. Milk thistle may support healthy liver function. Its name is linked to an old legend, according to which the white spots on the leaves originated from the Virgin Mary’s milk.
Because of its appearance, milk thistle is also
often
grown as an ornamental plant
.
Milk thistle is an ancient herb, formerly known as the “Crown of Thorns” due to its spines. Although it is native to the Mediterranean, it can also be grown in our climate. It was used as early as ancient times as a traditional remedy, administered, among other things, after snake bites. By the 17th century, people were already aware of its beneficial effects on the liver, blood pressure, and abdominal ailments, and it was also administered as a remedy for melancholy and depression.
The medicinal effects associated with milk thistle today are primarily related to liver disease. It protects this vital organ from harmful substances commonly found in food, drink, or the air. It can help, for example, in the treatment of liver inflammation and cirrhosis, as well as in preventing the formation of gallstones. It can also alleviate the effects of liver damage caused by long-term excessive alcohol consumption. Milk thistle is also used to regenerate liver cells and blood vessels, and to treat varicose veins and gallbladder diseases, the spleen and duodenum, for colic and jaundice, and as a decoction for treating hemorrhoids. It is also recommended as a dietary supplement for weight loss due to its detoxifying effects.
The main active ingredient in this miraculous herb is silymarin, which helps regenerate liver tissue. Silymarin is so potent that it is even used to regenerate damaged livers in drug addicts, alcoholics, and people who have suffered poisoning (e.g., from mushrooms or medications), as well as those who have undergone chemotherapy, are severely obese, or suffer from liver cirrhosis. Milk thistle seeds contain 4–6 percent of this substance.
The liver plays an indispensable role in the body by processing nutrients and serves as a key organ for metabolism. It also aids in the body’s detoxification and biotransformation, the synthesis of blood plasma proteins, and serves as a storehouse for vitamins, iron, glycogen, and other substances. Because the liver also performs many other important functions, its failure leads to metabolic disorders and impaired blood clotting; in acute cases, liver failure can be fatal.
There are no known side effects from long-term use; only in rare cases may mild laxative effects occur during the first few days.
For milk thistle to be effective, it should be taken regularly for several weeks to months, preferably 2–3 times a year.
It is important to avoid alcoholic beverages, synthetic medications, and high-fat foods during this treatment.
