Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is a one-year or two-year-old massive thistle of the family Asteraceae.
Biennial herb, sprouts in spring with a bunch of spiny leaves with distinctive white veins. At the end of June, purple-red inflorescences appear on about 1 m long stems. Inflorescence lasts from July to September. By the end of summer, the flowers develop into fruits, which are then harvested. Milk thistle can help the liver function properly. The name is related to an old legend, which gave rise to white spots on the leaves of the Virgin Mary.
Because of its appearance, the milk thistle is also grown as an ornamental plant.
Milk Thistle is an ancient herb, formerly also called "Christ's Crown" due to its thorns. Although it is native to the Mediterranean, it can also be grown under our conditions. It was already used in antiquity as a traditional medicine, among others, administered after snake bites. By the 17th century, people already knew its positive effect on liver, blood pressure, abdominal problems and was also given as a cure for melancholy and depression.
The healing effects with which the milk thistle is today are mainly related to liver disease. It protects this important organ from undesirable substances commonly found in food, drink or air. It can help, for example, in the treatment of inflammation and cirrhosis of the liver, but also as a prevention of gallstones. It may also alleviate the effects of liver damage from prolonged alcohol abuse. Milk thistle is also used for the regeneration of liver cells and vessels, varicose veins, diseases of the gallbladder, spleen and duodenum, colic, jaundice and decoction in the treatment of hemorrhoids. It is also recommended as a dietary supplement in weight reduction for its detoxifying effects.
Milk thistle can also help against drug poisoning, food or fungi, blood circulation disorders, low blood pressure, asthma, allergies, migraine and dizziness or nausea while traveling.
In earlier times, the thistle was used in the form of leaves and root to treat ailments, today the main usable part of the seed is processed into teas, oils, capsules, tinctures, tablets or mixtures of herbs.
The main active ingredient contained in this miraculous herb is the herb is silymarin restoring liver tissue. Silymarin has such potent effects that it is also used to regenerate damaged liver in drug addicts, alcoholics, poisoners (such as fungi or drugs), chemotherapy, severe obesity or liver cirrhosis. Milk thistle has 4 - 6 percent of this substance in seeds.
The liver has an indispensable function of nutrient processing in the body and a key metabolic organ. They also help in the detoxification of the body and biotransformation, the synthesis of blood plasma proteins and serve as a storehouse of vitamins, iron, glycogen and other substances. Because they also have many other important functions, metabolic disorders, blood clotting may occur in the event of failure, and in acute cases liver failure may be fatal.
Milk thistle is not recommended in any form to pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with high blood pressure and without consulting a physician to people suffering from serious diseases.
The side effects of prolonged use are unknown, but in rare cases, mildly laxative effects may occur in the first few days.
To be effective, Milk Thistle should be taken regularly for several weeks to months, preferably 2-3 times a year. It is important to avoid alcoholic beverages, synthetic medicines and fat-rich foods during this treatment. In the case of more serious liver diseases, milk thistle in the form of tablets, oil, tincture or capsules with a higher silymarin content is suitable. If we want to regenerate and detoxify the body, tea from crushed seeds is sufficient.
Proper preparation of medicinal tea
For proper leaching, the seeds must first be crushed. For the preparation of medicinal tea we need 1 teaspoon of crushed seeds, which are poured about ¼ l of boiling water and allowed to stand for 10 - 20 minutes, after which the seeds are drained. The milk thistle tea is drunk hot in small sips - on an empty stomach in the morning, about ½ hours before lunch and in the evening before bed. For proper effect, it is recommended to drink tea for several weeks.
